Race Report: Carolina Cup 2022

On Wednesday April 27th our Starboard SUP North American team left in the middle of the night to drive to Wrightsville Beach North Carolina. From Canada it was about a twelve and a half hour drive. I slept for most of the way. When I woke up, all I could see was greenery along the highway. I rolled my window down and breathed in the salt air. My heart began to beat faster as I knew we were approaching our destination.

My Experience at the ICF 2021 SUP World Championships in Hungary

When I decided I wanted to go to the ICF 2021 SUP World Championships, I didn’t anticipate still being in the midst of a global pandemic. Travelling in the current climate isn't easy, but flying with a very fragile 14' race board to a country where you're supposed to quarantine for ten days upon entry and then find your way to a town two hours from the airport felt almost impossible. Despite that, one of my goals this year was to race internationally and I was determined to make it happen. I travelled with Blue Ewer who was also competing for Team GB, and my boyfriend Jaime as support crew. After nearly more hiccups than my stress levels could cope with en route, we eventually made it to Balatonfüred in Hungary.

Forget carbon capture, rewilding is what’s needed to fight climate change

The UK boasts an approximate 7,600km of navigable canals and rivers and as much as 240,000km of rivers and streams throughout. 161 of the UK’s rivers and streams are classified as chalk streams - a unique and extremely nutrient rich source of clean drinking water that are born in underground chalk aquifers and springs, and provide an ideal breeding ground for abundant wildlife, making up an 85% of all chalk streams worldwide.

Do’s and Don’ts for Watching Marine Life

For me, the most exciting part of every paddle is the wildlife I encounter along the way. Over the years I’ve had some amazing wildlife encounters whilst out paddling, from stingrays in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds, to grey seals, barrel jellyfish, and giant blue fin tuna right here in the UK.

Paddle Logger Proudly Supports the Ocean8Challenge

The ocean is what keeps the planet alive. It regulates the climate, absorbs CO2 and is a source of livelihood and nutrition for billions of people. But did you know that 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into the ocean every day? To put that into perspective, that equates to one garbage truck full of plastic being emptied into the ocean every single minute, and only 1% of it floats - the rest sinks to the bottom of the sea. On UK beaches alone, there are approximately 5000 pieces of plastic and 150 plastic bottles to be found per square mile.

Giving Back with SUP Skills

I am so fortunate that I get to spend as much time on the water as I do now. Especially while I have Paddle Logger along for the ride with me, it’s even harder now to take me off the water than ever before. Believe it or not, my life around water wasn’t always this way. During my childhood I was always outside, but didn’t spend a lot of time near the water, unless it was my backyard pool. When I tell people this, most of them are shocked. They say to me “How is that possible!? You basically spend every waking minute on the water!”

Black Project x Paddle Logger Collaboration

Personally I have been using Black Project Fins and Paddles for SUP for the past couple of years now and highly rate the equipment and innovation that Chris is putting out. Whenever we are testing Paddle Logger we always ensure that before updates are released a certain amount of on water testing is done. Putting the app through its paces in the real world. More often than not it means me heading out for a few hours in varying conditions checking everything is working as we expect and ensuring that what we have theorised is easy to use and makes sense for the paddler. Naturally the use of Black Project equipment has become a part of that testing process.
