Stay Connected When Conditions Get Tough

Paddling can be a fun, relaxing and adventurous outdoor activity, but it also comes with its share of challenges - especially when the weather turns unpredictable or when you're navigating unfamiliar waters. At Paddle Logger, we understand that staying safe and connected is paramount for every paddler, whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out. That's why we’re so excited to introduce our new route-planning feature, PaddlePLAN™ - recently featured by Apple. Designed to enhance your paddling experience and keep you connected, even in tough conditions.

Plan Your Adventure

Before you hit the water, Paddle Logger allows you to plot your route using waypoints. This feature enables you to visualise your journey and check the total distance before you set off. Aiming for a chosen distance can help you push your limits, paddling slightly further than you did last time. So far, we’ve had nothing but great feedback about this, as paddlers know how far they’ve got left until they reach their destination.

You can create routes on your iPhone or Apple Watch, making it easy to plan your adventure on the go. For many users, the larger screen on their iPhone is ideal for detailed planning, while the Apple Watch becomes a handy tool during the actual paddling with detailed heart rate, speed and pace data visible with every paddle stroke.

Imagine you’re gearing up for a weekend paddle on a scenic river. You can take your time mapping out your route, adding waypoints at strategic locations, and visualising the distance. Once you’re satisfied with your plan, simply sync the route to your Apple Watch, allowing you to leave your phone securely stowed away in a drybag - safe from splashes and water damage.

Stay on Course

Once you tap GO, your adventure begins. Paddle Logger provides real-time navigation with directional arrows guiding you to each waypoint. This feature is particularly beneficial in tricky conditions, such as strong winds or shifting currents, where it's easy to drift off course without realising. If you find yourself veering away from your planned route (perhaps you’ve accidentally paddled up the wrong creek or drifted out to sea) the app alerts you with visual cues and haptic feedback on your Apple Watch, helping you get back on track swiftly.

If you’re using your iPhone, you can unlock the screen to view a full map of your surroundings. On Apple Watch, you can rotate the digital crown to swipe through each tracking screen, also with a visible map.

But what if you float too far off course? Paddle Logger is equipped with a built-in safety net. If you’re still heading off course several minutes later, it can automatically fire an SMS alert to your emergency contacts. This message includes your live location and coordinates, ensuring that help can reach you if needed. This peace of mind allows you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings without the worry of losing your way.

Top Tips for Using Paddle Logger in Tough Conditions

  1. Know your limits: Check the wind speed and tidal conditions before you head out. They’re now located right underneath the GO button on both iPhone and Apple Watch, ensuring you can’t miss them.

  2. Plan ahead: Map out your PaddlePLAN™ before you set off. Consider factors like weather, water levels, and potential hazards such as shipping lanes, rocks or other water users.

  3. Sync Your Devices: Don’t forget to sync your next PaddlePLAN™ to your Apple Watch for easy navigation

  4. Have a Backup Plan: It’s common knowledge in the paddling community to always share your route and expected return time with someone who isn’t joining you. We made this simple with PaddleLIVE® - designed to work alongside your PaddlePLAN™, PaddleLIVE® keeps your emergency contacts in the loop with SMS updates, your route map, coordinates and what3words location. We’ll even let them know if you don’t make it back on time, ensuring help is just around the corner whenever you may need it.

Whether you’re paddling solo or with friends, knowing that you have a reliable navigation and safety system at your fingertips allows you to focus on what truly matters: enjoying the great outdoors. So gear up, plan your route, and paddle on - adventure awaits, and you’re ready for it!
